Schools unhurt by admissions change

Four prominent universities that ditched their early admissions programs have answered questions about whether the move would hurt their popularity. That answer is no. All are reporting record applications this year.

Harvard, Princeton and the University of Virginia attracted widespread attention with announcements in 2006 that they would stop holding a separate, early round of admissions in the fall. They argued the practice contributes to anxiety and disadvantages students who need financial aid. This year, they began considering all applicants in a single pool with a January deadline.

The University of Florida later made a similar announcement and moved to a single deadline of Nov. 1. Most selective schools kept some form of early admissions.

Now, the results are in.

Matthews unveils Clinton plan to make higher education more accessible

Increasing a tuition tax credit, increasing Pell grants and simplifying the student aid process are a few of the proposals Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton campaign officials unveiled Thursday morning as part of her effort to make college more affordable and accessible.Sen. John Matthews, a state co-chair of the Clinton presidential campaign, presented Clinton's educational plan during a press conference held on the s.jpg of Claflin University's Tingley Memorial Hall.Speaking to about 20 students gathered behind him, Matthews stressed the impact Clinton's plan would have on them and thousands of other college students."If we can reduce your cost to go to college, more of our children will have access and all of us will be better off," Matthews said. "This plan is intended to make sure that lower income students have a chance to compete in this knowledge-based economy by getting a college degree and reducing your burden when you get out of college.

Volunteers brighten lives with Thanksgiving meal

Strangers, even," Pitts said as she ate Thanksgiving dinner Thursday with her family at the Salvation Army's annual Thanksgiving Day lunch.

Salvation Army Capt. Roy Harris estimated that about 300 people came to the dining hall to eat. Another 250 plates were prepared and delivered to those who were not able to come to the shelter on Bell Street. Harris said the Thanksgiving day meal is part of the "practical expression" of the Salvation Army's mission of sharing love, kindness and generosity to those in need.

Volunteer Mae Cohen couldn't agree more.

"It just makes me feel good to see that everyone got Thanksgiving dinner," said Cohen, a first-grade teacher who said she was especially glad to have helped children.

Through donations, the Salvation Army was able to prepare a traditional Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings.

STATE OF THE STATE: Text of Delaware governor's prepared address

Lieutenant Gov. Carney, President Pro Tem Adams, Speaker Spence, members of the 144th General Assembly, members of the Delaware judiciary, other elected officials, members of my Cabinet, state employees, distinguished guests, my family and my fellow Delawareans

I am particularly proud to appear before you for this State of the State address as it kicks off my last year as your Gov.. As you all know, my career in elected public office started in this Chamber, where so much of what I worked on as your Gov. began as a priority for me as a legislator.

My annual appearances before you, my legislative friends, have not only been an opportunity to remember my roots but also reaffirm my long-standing priorities, such as creating world-class schools, protecting our precious environment, fighting to keep and create jobs, and working to make Delaware a healthier state.

Wisconsin Sports Spectacular

My suggestion...Move Bill Hall back there. He obviously wasn't comfortable in center, which affected his bat. It's time to give Tony Gwynn Jr. the keys to center, Hart in right, and Braun in left. Eric Gagne will get his mojo back in Milwaukee, this is the year to make some noise at Miller Park and get into the playoffs. Packers No Superbowl in 08 for the Packers. Brett Farve will come back for another year pushing my Canton Ohio vacation back another year. They will draft defense to build a solid defensive squad like the one the Ravens had in 02. They will also build that offensive line up to create solid foundations on both sides of the ball. Grabbing a QB in the late rounds to back up Rodgers for life after Farve would be a good idea. Nall isn't the guy, because he isn't good enough. They will need somebody who can actually play because it looks like Rodgers is incredibly fragile.
