Financial Aid Schools Apply Financial Aid

Schools unhurt by admissions change

Four prominent universities that ditched their early admissions programs have answered questions about whether the move would hurt their popularity. That answer is no. All are reporting record applications this year.

Harvard, Princeton and the University of Virginia attracted widespread attention with announcements in 2006 that they would stop holding a separate, early round of admissions in the fall. They argued the practice contributes to anxiety and disadvantages students who need financial aid. This year, they began considering all applicants in a single pool with a January deadline.

The University of Florida later made a similar announcement and moved to a single deadline of Nov. 1. Most selective schools kept some form of early admissions.

Now, the results are in.

School, Lindsay Roberts deny all

Oral Roberts University and its president's wife, Lindsay Roberts, issued written statements Saturday saying that claims and accusations added to a lawsuit Friday are untrue.

A report attached to the lawsuit Friday contains allegations that Roberts, 51, spent a great deal of time with an underage male.

"I live my life in a morally upright manner and throughout my marriage have never, ever engaged in any sexual behavior with any man outside of my marriage as the accusations imply," Roberts said in her statement.

"Allegations against me in a lawsuit .

Kamal Abu Eita & Kamal Khalil

It used to be that if we wanted to get something into a demonstration, we would have the women carry it in.

Also different: The type of tear gas used today. I miss the old tear gas, which I love in a way. We used to catch it and throw back at the police. Now, the gas they use suffocates people instantly, so we fall down and are either trampled or arrested. We had someone analyze it its banned internationally and, of course, its made in the USA, he alleges.

After a few years as a follower, Abu Eita found himself promoted by a kind of group consensus to leader.

But nobody chooses anybody, he quickly adds. If a demonstration is split in half because of police intervention, someone has to take over. As students, we came up with many slogans that people later took up and repeated in the events of January 18 and 19, 1977, he says, referring to the demonstrations over rising prices (demonstrations that were themselves preludes to that years later protests against Sadats pledge to enter peace talks with Israel).

Brief: Commission approves construction of cancer center garage

The Smilow Cancer Center at Yale-New Haven Hospital moved one more step towards reality on Wednesday, when the City Plan Commission unanimously approved the site plan for the garage on the Lot E site.

The 845-parking garage was at the center of negotiations completed last fall. Arbitration ended in early October as the hospital agreed to include 24 units of market-priced housing.

The housing will be offered to patients undergoing treatment who do not need hospitalization and their families, as well as staff members on a temporary basis.

Although more expensive for the hospital, the housing was important for city officials who wanted to avoid having the center isolated from the rest of the community.

Retail shops will also surround the mixed-use garage.

50,000 to file IT returns again

Setting a record of sorts, traffic cops challaned nearly 1,600 violators in the Feroze Gandhi market here in the last one month. As per rough estimates, total revenue generated was around Rs 16 lakhs. The market is one of the busiest in the city, with a large number of business houses, commercial offices, banks and finance companies located here.

Police sources said the market had recently become quite sensitive due to its proximity to the mini-secretariat, police headquarters and the CIA office. Vehicles parked dangerously close to the secretariat wall were a major threat, so vigil in the area was increased.

SI Mukesh Kumar got the distinction of challaning nearly 1,000 vehicles. SSP R.K. Jaiswal, who had specially ordered increased monitoring in the market, has awarded him with a commendation certificate given by IG Zonal.

Biofuels: GM looking ahead with buy-in on maker of cellulosic ethanol

General Motors is appropriately looking to the future, not the present, with its investment in ethanol firm Coskata.

At the Detroit Auto Show on Sunday, GM announced an unspecified investment in the Illinois firm, which is working to produce cellulosic ethanol commercially.

Unlike the corn-based ethanol now found at pumps and so popular with the political crowd, cellulosic ethanol does not rely on huge swaths of American farmland. And cellulosic ethanol is less polluting than its corn cousin.
