| Schwarzenegger Vetoes DREAM Bill for Immigrant Students
Late Saturday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger issued a series of vetoes on various bills — and in so doing dashed the hopes of student activists who have been pushing to make it easier for undocumented students to obtain financial aid and to pressure publishers and faculty members into changing practices that some believe contribute to the high price of textbooks. At the same time, Governor Schwarzenegger signed another bill on textbooks, favored by publishers and opposed by student groups. .
P-I Sports Star Award Winner: Sarah Martinez
Martinez came to Seattle Pacific with some impressive credentials as a two-time state 1A player of the year, but she was only getting started. Martinez was a four-time, first-team All-Conference selection and two-time GNAC player of the year who tallied 17 goals and nine assists with seven game-winning goals as a senior. SPU won three GNAC championships with Martinez, which included four trips to the NCAA Tournament and two visits to the Final Four. This season, she helped guide the Falcons to an SPU-record 23-0 mark and a No. 2 national ranking before the team suffered a loss in the national semifinals. Buck & New Dawg: Bring on the Giants for Round 3
Vinny was a Heisman Trophy winner/No. 1 pick overall who didnt win enough ... but didnt give up trying. I think history will treat him kindly. It should. Can anyone beat the New England Patriots? NEW DAWG: Yes, the Colts can beat them. BUCK: I just have a gut feeling about Jacksonville. The Jags could get first crack at the Patriots, too. I dont see anyone else winning at New England including the Colts. And I dont see Tom Brady losing in Glendale, Ariz., if he gets there. Is the Cowboys offense headed into the playoffs in any better frame of mind than last years team? NEW DAWG: Ill say yes. The Cowboys gave a weak effort against the Redskins because they didnt have much to play for. Last years team could not say that. BUCK: Losing two of the last three in December is about all thats the same.
How to be Generous Without Spoiling the Grandkids
When my children were younger, their grandparents in New York kept a scrapbook of their favorite comic strips to read aloud when the kids came to visit. Meanwhile, their Pittsburgh grandparents sent them copious clippings about the Steelers, the kids' favorite football team. Both sets of grandparents bought traditional presents as well, but it was those gifts of time and thoughtfulness that were most memorable. And that's worth keeping in mind this holiday season, when gift-giving by grandparents, well-intentioned and generous as it may be, can cause tensions on both sides of the generation gap. Spirit of giving. In a recent survey by AARP Financial, 79% of the grandparents said that their grandkids don't understand the value of a dollar. (And they often say the same about their adult children.

The category of fun slowly being pulled from library shelves
The sound of jazz fills the library at Arthur Jacobsen Elementary in Auburn as Art Spencer prepares for his afternoon storytelling session. "This isn't your traditional quiet library," Spencer said. Throughout the Auburn School District, Spencer is known for his animated reading sessions in which he brings characters to life. "Reading aloud keeps kids' attention," Spencer said. "It conveys emotion." Once considered a mainstay of the school library, this fun, engaging reading time could be in danger at some area schools, educators say. "All programs are challenged because of state budgets," said Rod Luke, executive director of K-12 student learning and district technology in Auburn schools. "You have to be extremely prudent in how you run programs these days." To adapt to these changes, Southeast King County districts say they are overhauling how they run their libraries and how much money goes into library programs.
UW Men | Huskies get pushed, but rally for win over Beavers
A little later, Giles and Brockman got tangled, each getting called for technicals along with Tarver, whose missed layin had started it all. "Two teams playing hard scraping and scrapping," Romar said. "Good ol' hard, aggressive basketball." Bob Condotta: 206-515-5699 or bcondotta@seattletimes.com. .
