| Rutgers: High unemployment, slow growth for NJ
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey is caught in "the economic doldrums" and its economy likely will perform worse than the rest of the nation's through at least 2012, according to a Rutgers University semiannual economic forecast. Slow job growth and rising unemployment are expected, with a quick turnaround unlikely, according to the Rutgers Economic Advisory Service forecast, released Thursday at a conference at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers. Experts speaking at the conference said they see a 50 percent chance of a recession hitting the nation this year, possibly as soon as the first quarter. "The fourth quarter (2007) gross domestic product number will be critical" in determining the trend, said Joseph Seneca, a professor at the school.
Future wide open for Skyline senior
His Skyline teammates tried to recruit him to Minnesota early on, but he asked them to stop. "It's my decision," said Cooper, a 2007 SportsDay first-team All-Area selection. "Where I am most comfortable is where I'm going." Cooper, No. 13 on SportsDay's Area Top 100, said he will visit Oklahoma or Wisconsin next weekend and possibly Kansas the weekend of Feb. 1. He visited Kansas State in the fall. Cooper said if he's blown away by Texas Tech, he could commit this weekend. "It's the school that's been coming after me for awhile," Cooper said. He plans to let things play out, but his cousin, Victor Hunter of Irving Nimitz, is a backup middle linebacker at Tech. And his family wants him to stay close to home.
Lobbyists advise anti-lobbyist
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Republican Mitt Romney said Thursday he could govern in the country's best interest because "I don't have lobbyists running my campaign," although Washington insiders are on his senior staff and registered lobbyists are top advisers. One of them, Ron Kaufman, chairman of the Washington-based Dutko Group, regularly sits across the aisle from Romney on his campaign plane, participates in debate strategy sessions and just last week accompanied Romney to a lunch in Myrtle Beach with Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C. Another adviser, former Rep. Vin Weber, R-Minn., is chairman of Romney's policy committee. He also is chief executive officer of Clark & Weinstock, and his corporate biography says he "provides strategic advice to institutions with matters before the legislative and executive branches of the federal government." "I think it's time for Washington – Republican and Democrat – to have a leader who will fight to make sure we resolve the issues rather than continuously look for partisan opportunity for score-settling and for opportunities to link closer to lobbyists," Romney said during a news conference.
Scrabble piracy spelled out
We are not surprised that fans have thoroughly enjoyed playing Scrabulous on Facebook.com," the letter says. "What consumers may not realize, however, is that Scrabulous is an illegally copied online version of the world's most popular word game." More articles Copyright © 2008, The Baltimore Sun .
AC360°: Seeing New Hampshire ... at 80 mph
That's because South Carolina has assumed Iowa and New Hampshire-like significance in the Republican presidential race. Huckabee won Iowa... McCain won New Hampshire... Romney won Wyoming and Michigan.Basically, it's all been a wash. So South Carolinians could very well be annointing a frontrunner. The story we are putting together for tonight's AC 360 is about the state's evangelical voters. Up to half of all GOP voters here are believed to be evangelical Christians. To win the Palmetto State, a candidate will have to do well with those voters. You might assume Mike Huckabee has the advantage. But the military culture is an important part of church culture in this state. And many people who feel strongly about that are voting for McCain. Keep your eye on snowy South Carolina! .
Stelmach says environmental toll from oil sands is a ‘myth'
And with your name I'd expect you would know that France now primarily depends on nukes for power... So one rusting Russian plant -Chernobyl - means nothing. If it did, we would also not drive because one old car crashed once. And the rock of the Canadian Shield is an ideal place to store nuclear 'waste' until we learn how to process it further. Buck & New Dawg: Bring on the Giants for Round 3
Vinny was a Heisman Trophy winner/No. 1 pick overall who didnt win enough ... but didnt give up trying. I think history will treat him kindly. It should. Can anyone beat the New England Patriots? NEW DAWG: Yes, the Colts can beat them. BUCK: I just have a gut feeling about Jacksonville. The Jags could get first crack at the Patriots, too. I dont see anyone else winning at New England including the Colts. And I dont see Tom Brady losing in Glendale, Ariz., if he gets there. Is the Cowboys offense headed into the playoffs in any better frame of mind than last years team? NEW DAWG: Ill say yes. The Cowboys gave a weak effort against the Redskins because they didnt have much to play for. Last years team could not say that. BUCK: Losing two of the last three in December is about all thats the same.
